Spring is finally here! And before you know it, the sun will be up to enjoy warmer days at the beach. So you better prepare your locks for a beachy, lighter look! Today I have the recipe to highlight your hair naturally, without using peroxides. If your hair is naturally black, don't expect it to turn platinum blonde. It lightens my hair up to 2-3 tones the first time, which for me works just fine.
Enjoy!
You will need:
1 cup prepared chamomile tea
2-3 lemons
1 Tbsp Olive oil
Spray bottle
Moisturizing Shampoo
Hair & Scalp protection sunscreen
Sunscreen for your skin!
* On a blender mix the tea with lemons and separate the juice with a skimmer.
1. Wash your Hair with moisturizing shampoo
2. Apply some Hair & Scalp protection sunscreen on your roots
3. On a spray bottle, add the lemon juice with the olive oil and spray it on your hair AND YOUR HAIR ONLY! If you spray it on your scalp it will dry up and cause blisters. The olive oil will condition your hair and prevent it to dry out.
4. Leave the lemon juice in your hair to dry for about half an hour, then go outdoors to get some bright sun on it (this is where sunscreen is really important!). Stay out in the sun for about 30 minutes. The lemon juice makes your hair photosensitive, which causes the sun to lighten it. Don't exceed the half hour period the first time, since the lightening process varies depending on your natural hair color (and it could turn orange).
5. Go back to the shade or indoors and wait for at least half hour. (Keep it on your hair as long as you can).
6. When you are done, rinse your hair with cold water and apply some leave in conditioner or moisturizer of your preference, I prefer olive oil or avocado oil :)
The amount of time you are exposing your hair to direct sunlight with the lemon juice in it will determine how much highlight it will cause. If you are satisfied with the amount of highlighting you get from this regimen, repeat every two to three weeks to maintain it.
* Be careful. If this is your first time doing this you might want try a little bit at a time.Just in case you don't like the way it looks on you.
